What happened?

Even if one calls it "coercive interrogation", torture is wrong.

Apparently, in this upside-down world where "Wrong is Right", so-called conservatives and so-called Christians support torture now. Kudos to Andrew Sullivan for ringing the bell on them the past few years.

He even lauds Hillary. Cue the locusts.

School for Scoundrels

If this is a drama, it's not dramatic. If it's a comedy, it's not funny. What it is, folks, is a steaming pile of dung. I bet talents like Sarah Silverman and Ben Stiller go into hiding and turn their cellphones off on weekends when movies like this debut. Why would they appear in this? I guess they owed someone a favor. And who is the non-talented hack in the lead? Criminy, I want two hours of my life back.

Rolling Stones

It's a gas gas gas

A little rain didn't stop 50,000 of my closest friends from enjoying 2 hours of the Stones at Churchill Downs tonight. The highlight was an extended "Midnight Rambler"--a serious bluesy foray.

Alice Cooper warmed up and that's the photo here. His band rocked very hard and sounded great. This is the best quality my cell would offer. The stage was huge with two "floors" of audience contained within. I'm not kidding. It almost looked life an office building.

The crowd was wild and into it. I saw joints and open bourbon bottles around me. Everyone was dancing. Mick apologized for the "shit weather" but Keith said bid deal: "I take it as it
comes". Finally, it was fun to see the band perform "Dead Flowers" with its reference to the Kentucky Derby since they were playing at the track.

News flash: Smoking = Bad

If this study from Pueblo, CO holds up to scrutiny, it's another feather in the cap of those who push for smoking bans (like here in Louisville).

Summary: "The study showed that heart attack rates in Pueblo decreased by 27 percent after
implementation of the city’s smoke-free ordinance."

Lyric of the Day

All Things Must Pass (George Harrison)

Sunrise doesn't last all morning
A cloudburst doesn't last all day
Seems my love is up and has left you with no warning
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away

Sunset doesn't last all evening
A mind can blow those clouds away
After all this, my love is up and must be leaving
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away
All things must pass
None of life's strings can last
So, I must be on my way
And face another day

Now the darkness only stays the night-time
In the morning it will fade away
Daylight is good at arriving at the right time
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away
All things must pass
All things must pass away

Portent for November?

Andrew Sullivan explicates the divide between conservatism and Republican party here.

Money quote:
American conservatism has gone from being a political philosophy rooted in scepticism of power, empirical judgment and limited government into an ideology based in born-again religious faith, immune to empirical reality and dedicated to the relentless expansion of presidential clout. It sanctions wiretapping without court warrants, indefinite detention without trial and the use of torture.

The Summer of Bob winds down

Today or tomorrow, I drive from Provincetown to Kentucky. 18 hours driving time over a couple of days. I'm melancholy but glad to be going home at the same time. 4 months of paradise is hard to leave behind. But home is home and I can't wait to get there.

Caption: 3 implements of summer, WSJ, mocha from Joe espresso bar in the west end and sunglasses, reside on "Ray's Bench" in front of Bravo on Commercial Street, my usual spot.

Pope-ology

If you can read about this latest missive from His Pradaness without a snicker, call me. Let's do lunch. Read my lips: religion is an obsolete evolutionary limb we need to discard.

UPDATE 9/18/06: I read this Sam Harris piece after I wrote the item above.

Early morning at the beach

Here's a good shot showing the beach and ocean to the right (west) and the backwater area to the left. An hour after low tide, it's mainly sand although you can see some water on the far left. The dune in the middle divides these two landscapes and in the distance is Wood's End Lighthouse at the far end of Herring Cove Beach.

Full Moon

Here is a similar view to mine last night having clam chowder and grilled swordfish at Pepe's on the waterfront.
