Hating winter even more

Third day with no power. Who needs heat anyway?

From the utility company:
As of 10 a.m., 172,000 LG&E customers are without power. KU has 160,000 customers without power throughout the state.

Approximately 40 counties within our service area have sustained significant damage as a result of this winter storm.

Downed wires:
LG&E: 11,329
KU: 7,077

3,977 workers are currently working on restoration efforts for both LG&E and KU combined.

Estimating full restoration will occur 7 to 10 days in LG&E's service area.

Statewide, full restoration may take up to two weeks.

The Man Who Owns the News

The new inside story of the Murdoch regime and its purchase of the Wall Street Journal is poorly written but full of insights into what makes multi-generational plutocrats tick. This includes not only the Murdoch organization which bought the paper, but the Bancrofts who sold it after a hundred years of hands-off ownership.

The subtitle is "Inside the Secret World of Rupert Murdoch". Michael Wolff had unprecedented access to the man himself as well as family and associates. It's a pity he writes like a high school newspaper gossip columnist and tries to be cute at every turn. The stream of zen psychobabble is relentless. This 400 page book should have been half that.

The preview looked like it might be funny but it was infantile and predictable and pretty much lame.

Milk

This film is fabulous in many respects. Gus Van Sant makes two hours fly by packaging a lot of history that moves and is moving. Must see. Sean Penn inhabits the role of Harvey Milk.
